kool time - 3rd time lucky (please read on so this lousy song post makes sense…)
if you only read one of my posts this year, please make it this one.
On the eve of the Release of the EP Save Yourself by nhac which i recently played on, i have decided to post my 10 years of drumming in 10 days. It recently occurred to me that i’ve been doing this for a while now, and it might be interesting to slap together kind of a retrospective. For the next ten days i will post a song each day chronicling my drumming adventures since i started playing around ‘99, culminating in one of the tracks from the nhac EP. Some of it is embarassing, and you will certainly see how tastes and influences have changed for me over the years.
So here is the first song - kool time by 3rd time lucky.
3rd time lucky was the band i started in high school with my 3 best friends in 2000 and this song came off the first studio recording i/we ever did. It was an EP entitled Greatest Hits. Recorded in early 2003 i think, at the height of our love and appreciation for all things pop punk. Our favourite bands were Millencolin and Bodyjar. I skipped the first week of my second year Uni classes to record this. Given how close the four of us were, we all thought we’d be doing this till we grew old and made millions.
We started out practicing on weekends in our high school music room - i managed to kiss enough arse to have the prinicipal give me a key. I didn’t have my own drum kit and the school gear was pretty beat up. With the help of our music teacher at the time we sold chocolates to raise money and eventually bought some new gear.
We were pretty fresh faced at the whole being in a band thing when we recorded this, we hadn’t even played any shows. Also it cost a ton of money, like nearly 4k. These days we do our own recordings for next to nothing. We used this EP to book shows and it worked out well, for 2 years we gigged pretty consistently and even managed to make a few fans. The following year we went back into the studio to record a couple more songs, but more on that in tomorrow’s post.

Ok, so by today’s standards this song (and probably the next one too) are pretty average, but hey, this is us just starting out and i guess i had hoped that what these songs lack in musical awesomeness i could make up for in the story behind them. I guess i kind of hope that as we progress through the time line these songs i post will get better.
Please enjoy this series, i assure you plenty of variation in the things you will hear. And by all means if you know what it’s like to share a passion like this, please email me ‘cause i’d love to hear about it: rhythmandbeats@gmail.com
