D A Y 6 : LIVE FROM THE ICE RIVERS OF VENUS by Lorna Slavin.
ok ok ok so this is from the same EP as yesterday’s post. but i’m posting it anyway for 2 reasons. 1. because i really like this song and 2. because i was short 1 song overall to fill out this series. There. I said it.
Once again, with sound medical advice i urge you turn this one up as loud as you can. Close your eyes, other wise it won’t be as good. Let it surround you. When that chorus kicks in for real, if you’re like me, you’ll feel like you’re flying, or travelling through time or something.
Now to the narrative.
Things i like about this song are thus. With many of the lorna songs they flow in movements, that is, there are discernable sections of the song which progress into other noticeably different sections, almost like scenes or songs within a greater song. I like the way the first movement seems to go for just a little bit too long before giving you only a glimpse of the glorious chorus before picking the wrong direction at a Y junction and taking you somewhere really messy. At the same time though, the fucked up ending is justified by the twinkly bits in the beginning and the whole thing evens out. Everybody wins. Also note that all the vocals were all done by Steve, and this song is a testament to his versatility.
Most of the songs on this EP were done in 3 takes or less, but for some reason there was one part in this song where, as soon as i started thinking about exactly what i was playing i lost my mojo and had to redo it like 50 times. I know it may sound weird but the truth is i’ve never played a song twice the same way in my entire life. In every take or show or whatever i always end up taking certain liberties with what i play. I tend to just try to hold it together with the click as best I can and hope that what you want to play, happens. Most of the time in tracking, as a drummer, you go first and track all the parts on your own, so you really have to remember how the song goes and basically play it back in your head as you go, as i find a guide track more distracting than anything in most cases. Still, as always, it’s the little things that you notice about your own work that annoy you the most. I hear inconsistencies all over this song, like the difference in attack between the left and right beaters of my kick pedals simply due to the fact that my left leg isn’t as strong. As such is the story of my life i think, i wish i had practiced more.
If you go to the myspace of this band there is a full video clip of our entire very last performance before this band was dismantled for good. The whole set was 4 songs and only goes for 17 minutes before the venue kicked us out for playing too late. The rendition of believe in this is pretty fun, so much beer was drunk that night but at least check out the first song, it’s BADASS.
